LICQ just hangs on RH 7.1 w/ GNOME

Description

I performed a default installation of Red Hat 7.1 on my virtual machine (using GNOME). I downloaded the full source for licq 1.0.3. I compiled, linked, and installed licq, then I compiled, linked, and installed the qt plugin. When I tried to run licq under my user account, it appears to just hang. Doesn't do anything else, I cannot even register. I checked, however, and it does create the .licq directory. I'm running this system under VMware. Has anyone encountered a problem such as this and is there, perhaps, a work-around?
