Could you please explain why should you ever change the default port number unless you do not have a direct connection to this port, e.g. you're behind a cruel firewall.

it didn't worked with default port, in fact i still can't connect. but from other computer with winxp where i am using miranda as icq client i can connect without problems. in miranda i have set port 0 which according to description means random number. i also tried 21 (recommended by friend), 80 and 443 which are described in miranda as 'use if you are having problems connecting through http proxys erver - i don't use it, but what if) and some random numbers i don't remember. result is always the same.

from the same computer i can use www, ftp,skype... only icq fails

What does telnet login.icq.com 5190 say? It should be asterisk with two random visible symbols.

[selmi@localhost ~]$ telnet login.icq.com 5190 Trying 64.12.161.185... Connected to login.icq.com (64.12.161.185). Escape character is ']'. *w

strange coincidence, i launched licq to test, it didn't connected, but i left it running. it was offline when i read mail i got from you. as soon as i launched this telnet command licq connected.... probably miracle but i am glad its working again. thanks for help :-)

  • status changed from new to closed
  • resolution set to wontfix

Sometimes the server gets fussy... I believe it may be that they are upgrading servers or doing work on them. The login.icq.com has a round robin DNS, so you may get unlucky at times.

And for the record, any port is OK.
